What is copywriting?
At its simplest, copywriting is the use of words to promote a product, business, person, or idea, with the goal of persuading the reader/listener to take a specific course of action. Read more here

What is the process for copywriting? What does the business do? What does the copywriter do?
Once the agreement is made to do a copy project, the copywriter asks for specific information from the client - such as an intake questionnaire as well as any previous marketing pieces for that particular product (the more of this provided by the client, the more the client saves in fees). The copywriter then goes through the information provided, and comes up with a proposal to make sure he and the client are on the same page about the project. When that is approved, the copywriter writes the copy. A draft of this is sent to the client for review, and revisions, if needed, are made as agreed to in the contract or agreement. The finished copy is sent to the client.
What does copywriting cost?
When copywriting is done well, it will bring in far more in results than it will cost you. As far as pricing, there is no simple answer for this as it depends on the skill level and experience of the copywriter as well as the amount of work involved in a particular project. However, to give you a ballpark idea of my fees, you are welcome to check out my Pricing Guide. These fees are based on industry norms for a well-trained copywriter.
Also, it is common for partial payment to be made up front - up to 50% of the fee.
If I can't afford a copywriter, but want to improve my marketing, what can I do?
While I believe that investing in good copy is one of the best things you can do for your marketing, there are things you can do other than hiring a copywriter. Coming from a small business background such as I have, I wanted to include some options for the small business owner as well.
The best thing to do would be to invest in a copywriting course. I am in the process of developing one, so watch for that on the Workshops page.
Another option would be to have a copy critique done of your marketing pieces. Start with just one to try it out and see how that makes a difference. Learn more about the Copy Critique here
Sign up for the Copy Whisper Newsletter. You'll get a bonus mini course on some clues that will help to start you on the way to better copy. The newsletter will bring you more information about copywriting - tips and ideas that you can start to work into your marketing pieces.
What training does a copywriter take?
There are numerous copywriting programs available. My training is with the American Writers and Artists Institute, which has one of, if not the best, copywriting programs available. Their basic and masters courses were developed by Michael Masterson (a highly respected master copywriter who has sold over a billion dollars of products for his clients) together with a number of other master copywriters. This is learning from the best of the best.
