DOMAIN NAMES
If you have a website, you will need a domain name. Basically a domain name is your internet address, sometimes also known as your URL (Uniform Resource Locator).
And most internet addresses start with www which stands for World Wide Web.
So, for example, if you want to go to Google in Canada, the address would be www.google.ca, with "google.ca" being the domain name.
The http in front of that means Hypertext Transfer Protocol, which is a fancy way of telling the internet how to go get the address that you are looking for.
Most domain names, or at least the most common ones end in .com, but there are lots of other endings. You can have .net. .org, .biz, .info, .name, etc. and each country also has its own ending. Canada's being the .ca ending.
Okay - enough of this internet jargon. The main thing that you need to be concerned with is getting a domain name.
This is where you need to get creative. If you are lucky and your business or product name is a really unique one, then chances are you may be able to use that as your domain name.
Once you decide on what you want as a domain name, you will need to register that name. It's when you go to do that, that you will find out if someone else already has the name you want. And if they do, then you will need to come up with something else.
For example, my business is Willowrose Village. Now it would have been really nice to use a short, simple domain name like www.willowrose.com, but someone else already had that one. So then I went with www.willowrosevillage.com.
Depending on your business, you may want to register a number of domain names. You may have noticed that when you first came to the website for this Webplanner Dashboard, the domain name was www.webplannerdashboard.com. You can use domain names for individual products or services - in fact, sometimes that is the wiser way to go.
For now, think about what you would like as the domain name for your website.
Where would you register a domain name? Simply go online and do a search for "domain registration" and you'll get lots of places to choose from.
I use a company called Domains at Cost, which is a Canadian company. They're not one of the cheapest ones, but I've been satisfied with their service.
Another one which I have heard is reasonably priced is www.GoDaddy.com.
Some of the larger domain registries also offer hosting packages - which we'll look at hosting in the next section - and many hosting companies also offer domain registration.
